What Happens When You Hold a Forex Trade Overnight or Over the Weekend?

An open trade does not stop carrying risk when the trader closes the platform.

Positions held overnight may be subject to financing adjustments, while positions held over the weekend can face price gaps when the market reopens. These conditions should be understood before a trade is allowed to remain open.

Overnight financing—often called swap or rollover—is an adjustment applied when a leveraged position remains open beyond the provider’s daily cutoff. The amount may be a charge or, in some cases, a credit. It can depend on the instrument, trade direction, account type and prevailing financing conditions.

Some instruments may have a larger adjustment on a particular weekday to account for weekend settlement. Traders should review the current contract specification instead of assuming every instrument follows the same schedule.

Weekend risk is different.

Markets can close on Friday and reopen at a meaningfully different price after political, economic or geopolitical developments occur while regular trading is unavailable. This produces a gap between the closing and reopening prices.

If a stop loss lies inside that gap, the position may close at the next available price rather than the exact requested level. This is one reason stop-loss orders reduce risk without eliminating gap risk.

Before holding a position, consider:

  • Is a major announcement expected?

  • Could geopolitical news affect the instrument?

  • What financing adjustment may apply?

  • Is the position size appropriate for gap risk?

  • Does the original strategy permit overnight holding?

  • Is the trade being held because of analysis—or because the trader refuses to accept a loss?

The final question is especially important. Turning an intraday trade into a multi-day position because it moved against the trader changes the strategy after entry.

Holding overnight or over the weekend is not automatically right or wrong. It must be part of a predefined process supported by appropriate position sizing and an understanding of the associated costs.
